Here’s an example of a commissioned piece:

The final digital painting with a story to go with it.

This is Kimberly Boychuk, she was kind enough to offer her services to keep the penguins occupied with a painting class. I warned her, I warned her, and I warned her….

One penguin actually stood still long enough to model…. However, the other two…. sigh …. one stood behind the model and kept making silly faces, while the third painted both faces together and then added a moustache …… we now call him “Penguincasso”

Onto the stories…. enjoy!

New Airplane

The penguins built an airplane for Charlie
and are looking it over to make sure its ready for take-off.

At first, the plane didn’t move during take-off. The penguins added an extra fuel rubber band, winded it up…. and Charlie shot up into the air!

The Penguins said they’d be right up, but Charlie couldn’t see them anywhere.  Then, he spotted them!

Spotted the Penguins!

The Penguins saw that Charlie was running out of fuel, but they had a plan!

Running out of fuel and no landing gear…
What did the Penguins have in store?

The Penguins raced to the ground and deployed the emergency airbag system
to catch Charlie and his plane.

Saved by the penguins!

How to make friends with moose.

The Christmas Sweaters

1 – The penguins knew that whatever Charlie was doing,
he would definitely need their help.

2 – The penguins thought they heard a cat.
They quickly hid where a cat would never look to find them.

3 – Adding the final touches of yellow and the sweater is done.
Just don’t move and you’ll be fine.

4 –  Charlie working hard to get all the sweaters completed

5 – The penguins are embarrassed and don’t want to come out.

6 –  Charlie shows the penguins his sweater, convincing them to come out and have their picture taken for the Christmas & Holiday Season card

After intense negotiations, offers of one fish, two fish.
Then counter offers of red fish, blue fish…
the penguins were satisfied with their contract.

7 – Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Baking with Charlie & his Penguins

What ever Charlie is up to, the penguins know he is giong to need their help…

You can never add to much flour.

Apparently there comes a point in a penguins day when they need to take a break ….

… first nice warm spa bath …

… finish with a nice warm spa tanning session.

Mmmmm, freshly baked gingerbread cookies.

Time to add the icing and sprinkles

Hmmm, what to do with the empty sprinkle containers?

… and that’s how you make a homemade snow globe ride

Before the penguins could enjoy the cookies that Charlie made, they had to clean up, which they did.

Paper Airplanes!
This gave the penguins a little, big idea!

Garbage Hill Flight Test

(For those that are unaware, Winnipeg’s Westview Park is known as Garbage Hill. Google maps will even show you the sign)

It was supposed to be a quiet evening of star gazing but the penguins had other plans.
They wanted to test out their brand new wood jet plane with their brand new Goodon3000 slingshot.

Everything was going according plan, but the jet blew up….???

The penguins forgot to glue it to together,
which brings us to their sponsor…

“For all your wood jet planes, use Knot-Wood Glue!
Recommend by 8 out of 10 Penguins!
The other 2 forgot to use it.”

Dressing up & going carolling!

The penguins were excited to see Charlie all dressed up…

They rushed to their costume trunk and dove right in.
They couldn’t wait to see what Charlie had planned.

Carolling!
Before they arrived at the first house, the penguins were already bored.
Good thing they brought their favourite books.

When they opened the bag, Charlie was in for a bigger surprise

Play Video

4 – Chalie goes for a ride …

5 – The penguins felt bad that Charlie was having fun all by himself, so they joined him to keep him company.

6 – After they located all the marbles, it was time to learn how to play.
The penguins tend to make up their own rules.

7 – It was Charlie’s turn. This was the last marble that could win the game. He took his time and aimed carefully …

8 – The flick of his thumb, the marble went flying. Charlie had made the impossible shot possible!

9 – The Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were given out. Charlie stepped off the podium and went for a ride. Someone dropped their marbles all over the floor.

Checkers!

As Charlie lines up his checkers, the penguins build a fortress.

The penguins wanted to help Charlie feed the chickadees too.

Snow Angels

Having seen Charlie make a snow angel, the penguins gave it a try. Their first attempt gave them motion sickness.
Their next attempt, with cooperation,
was successful…

A fun game of soccer!

However, Charlie and the other penguins were never going to allow Steve to watch another professional soccer game on tv again, because Steve was adamant that in order to be a professional soccer player, when someone comes near you, you must toss yourself onto the ground, kicking and screaming in pain for no apparent reason.

…and then Steve left the automatic soccer ball launcher turned on…

Well, this was a surprise.
Bob the bungee jumping penguin showed up and jumped
out of the hot air balloon.

Ping Pong Ball  or Penguin Egg?

Our little snowman Charlie was so excited to show his penguins a brand new game he came across, that when he tossed up the ping pong ball and was about to strike it…. the penguins fainted.

The penguins thought it was a penguin egg.

After some minor adjustments, the penguins called Charlie over for a
friendly game of ping pong. … But then there was Steve….
He thought this was the most boring game ever, until the other penguins
explained that “keep your eye on the ball”
was just a sports phrase.

The Penguin Pirates Treasure

Charlie and his penguins discover a treasure map inside a bottle.
Their little adventure leads them to the ultimate pirate penguin treasure ever discovered …
100% Pure Canadian Maple Syrup!
The pirates swoop in and Charlie is about to leave, but one of the pirates points to the back of the map….
it was an invitation for anyone that found the map!

The Moonguins

The penguins often see Charlie staring up at the moon, which gave them an idea for an adventure of a lifetime for Charlie. They blindfolded Charlie
because he’s scared of heights and sent him to the moon to meet an ancient civilization …

Penguin Prisoners!

Charlie and his penguins were invited to a costume party.  The penguins all agreed that they looked soooo much better in black and white than Charlie, that they all dressed up as Prisoner Penguins and Charlie would be the police officer.

After Charlie explained to the police officer of their
brilliant costume idea, the officer gave Charlie
his very own police badge.

Metis Christmas Ornaments

Delivering Christmas Ornaments

Christmas Tree Decorating

As Charlie was putting up the lights, the penguins wrapped the garland (Charlie’s Sash) around the tree. They stopped to admire their work.

Did you know?

I wanted to share a little of my culture with you through
Our Little Snowman Charlie and his Penguins.
Nothing more and nothing less…. just sharing…

Charlie is wearing the traditional Metis Sash, with the Red River Carts in the Background, along with the Metis Flag. These are only a few of the items from Metis life ….

The Sash – Traditionally, it was about practicality for everyday use during the Fur Trade & Voyageurs times. It not only kept your pants up, you could hold items in it that were relevant to the times. Bundling up clothes, food, hunting supplies, towel, and the fringes could be used as a sewing kit. Tie boats together …horses… it could be used as rope to pull… etc…
Today’s Sash is used in ceremonies and showing your pride from where your people came from.

Although I have never used my sash in the traditional way, it’s practicality while out camping, kayaking and exploring, would come in handy.

Every New Year’s Eve, the penguins put on a fireworks display.

How it began...

The Story behind Charlie & and his Penguins

“Our Little Snowman & his Penguins” was the original title, which lasted for approximately a year.
Then he became known as “Charlie”.

Charlie & his Penguins were a result of a back injury.
The injury & pain prevented JD from sitting or standing at his easel in order to oil paint.
He took to his iPad and created a snow globe after having watched a Youtube tutorial.

But, this wasn’t enough for JD, he didn’t want to create what others were doing.
He wanted full control on what he created.

On Nov 19 2021 – Charlie came to life with his first little toboggan ride.

“Snowballs for Sale”
Nov 22, 2021

This was when Charlie starting wearing a pot for hat.

This idea came from a couple memories of
JD’s childhood.

Pot Hat
Kids have a tendency to gravitate to the kitchen cupboards,
where they pull out the pots and pans to play with.

Snowballs for sale
As a kid, my brother and I would set up a kool-aid stand in front of our house. There was a time when we painted rocks and would sell them too. Our grandmother was our biggest customer. I look back and I’m pretty sure I could have sold her a few snowballs as well.

Scarf
My mom would always wrap the scarf around my face and head several times. She didn’t want me to freeze or get sick. Except, we lived right across the street from our school. It took us longer to get wrapped up than it did to walk across the street.

The story & adventures of Charlie & his Penguins evolved from there …
